World Water Day focused on water and disasters
Since
1993, 22 March of each year has been observed as a World Water Day,
and this year's theme is on "Water and disasters". This
event, which provides an opportunity as well as a challenge to all
disaster managers, aims at inspiring worldwide political and community
action for preventing and mitigating water-related disasters, and
to enhance awareness in order to save lives and property, reduce
poverty and build sustainable development. One of the initiatives
undertaken for this year's celebration is the preparation of an
Information Kit which includes a booklet and a poster on Water and
Disasters and some other fact sheets.

Earthquake
reconstruction aided by the internet
An
innovative on-line information system aided the El Salvador earthquake
reconstruction. The "Reconstruir" is a portal, created
with the support of UNDP, to consolidate and distribute the immense
quantity of information generated by the various actors involved
in the reconstruction. It also helped demonstrate the accountability
and the status of many projects, and allowed those involved to know
in which locations work was in progress and in which it was not.
This initiative is an interesting model for using internet to bring
together several organizations from different sectors to solve real
development problems. "Reconstruir" actually helped speed
the planning and reduce the cost of El Salvador reconstruction.
