Forecasting
risk from tropical storms
Hardship
and suffering caused by the damaging weather systems can now be
minimized by the introduction of the new warning service to the
international disaster relief community. Reuters AlertNet (www.alertnet.org),
a humanitarian news portal, partners with the Tropical Storm Risk
(TSR), a forecasting venture, to provide early access to clear and
accurate information on the latest storm emergencies worldwide.
The TSR´s Tropical Storm Tracker (www.tropicalstormrisk.com)
feeds live storm warnings to AlertNet which in turn provides automatic
updates to emergency relief charities in order for them to plan
their emergency response when storms hit a populated area. This
forecasting initiative is designed particularly to meet the needs
of humanitarian relief planners.

Guidelines target older people in emergencies
An
initiative of HelpAge International, the "Older People in Disasters
and Humanitarian Crises: Guidelines for Best Practice" has
been published to suggest practical ways to meet the needs of the
older population in emergency situations. The guidelines also encourage
humanitarian workers to use older people´s experience and
knowledge of the population and local conditions to make aid more
effective.
