First Regional Training Course on Disaster Risk Communication (DRC-1),

Organized
by ADPC, the first Disaster Risk Communication course aims to build
the capacity of development workers to achieve more effective disaster
risk awareness dissemination. The Course would attempt to instill
theoretical as well as practical knowledge aspects of communication
campaigns.

A framework to guide and monitor disaster risk reduction
on-line conference, 25 August - 26 September 2003
Co-organised
by the UN/ISDR and the UN Development Programme, this on-line dialogue
discussed a proposed framework to understand, guide and monitor
disaster risk reduction. The archive of the framework and on-line

Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Disaster Reduction, 6-8
October 2003 Madrid, Spain
The
Government of Spain will host a Euro-Mediterranean Conference on
Disaster Reduction, co-organised by the Council of Europe (Major
Hazards Agreement) and the ISDR Secretariat. The event will contribute
to the Yokohama Strategy in the preparation of the Second World
Conference on Disaster Reduction, to be held in January 2005 in
Kobe, Japan.

30th Regional Disaster Management Course (DMC-30), Bangkok
Thailand, 3-21 November 2003
The
Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is offering the 30th Regional
Disaster Management Course (DMC-30) which will be held in Bangkok,
Thailand from 3-21 November 2003. The purpose of the course is to
provide comprehensive disaster management knowledge and skills to
enhance the capabilities of executive managers who have key disaster
management responsibilities. It is designed to enable professionals
working in disaster management, development and donor agencies to
effectively integrate disaster management into their development
programs and policies.
By
completing the course participants will learn how to:

Develop effective strategies and systems for disaster prevention,
mitigation, response and recovery
-
Apply risk management processes in order to identify, assess and
deal with disaster risks
-
Utilize an emergency operations center to manage disaster events
-
Assess key implementation issues and requirements in disaster
management.
ADPC
aspires to provide a model training experience in this course by
integrating well compiled study material, case studies, audio visual
enhancement and interactive adult learning strategies. Experienced
practitioners and experts from different international organizations
will complement ADPC¹s in-house expertise to conduct and facilitate
the DMC-30 course.

World Congress on Natural Disaster Mitigation, 19-21 February
2004, New Delhi, India
An
initiative of the continuing partnership between The Institution
of Engineers (India) - IE(I) and World Federation of Engineering
Organization - WFEO, the World Congress aims to provide a multi-disciplinary
forum for engineers, architects, planners, technocrats, scientists,
disaster managers, international and voluntary agencies and others
working for the field of natural disaster mitigation and management
to meet and share ideas, achievements and experiences. Exclusive
time will be provided for authors to present their work through
poster sessions and interact with delegates of eminence in their
chosen specialized fields.
The
Congress also offers a professional platform for face-to-face dialogue
with those who went through the thick and thin of the Gujarat Earthquake
of 26 January 2001, the Orrisa Super Cyclone of October 1998, and
many more cataclysmic events in the recent memory.
