Highlights from the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction

ISDR Highlights is published every two months by the Inter-Agency Secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR), available for subscribers via email, on the web at <http://www.unisdr.org/unisdr/Highlights2003.htm> in PDF, and in hard copy (available from UN/ISDR headquarters in Geneva and Regional Units in San Jose, Costa Rica and Nairobi, Kenya).

It is designed to provide a forum to share experiences, ideas and major developments in the field of disaster reduction, as well as to further enhance efforts toward the achievement of disaster reduction objectives such as increased public awareness, the expansion of risk reduction networks and the facilitation of information exchange.

The latest issue (ISDR Highlights 2003, Issue No. 1) include:

ABC Series on Disaster Risk Management

ADPC in partnership with UNDP - The Urban Governance Initiative (TUGI) is developing an Action for Better Cities (ABC) Information Series on Disaster Risk Management. It will be a pamphlet of issues, tips and reminders related to disaster risk management aimed at local government. Already existing are pamphlets on transport, water and waste management.

The pamphlet on Disaster Risk Management is expected to be published mid-2003.

MekongInfo, Regional Information System on Participatory Natural Resource Management <http://www.mekonginfo.org>

MekongInfo is an interactive system for sharing information and knowledge about participatory natural resource management in the Lower Mekong Basin (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam). In addition to over 2,700 documents (full-text and abstract) in the library, MekongInfo provides: a contacts database of individuals, projects and organizations, news and announcements of events, relevant web links, a gallery of useful resource materials, a forum for online discussions, and a free web hosting service. MekongInfo can be viewed in five languages - English, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai and Vietnamese. Only registered users can download full-text documents and abstracts. Registration is free-of-charge and takes a few minutes.

Regional Cooperation for Flood Information Exchange in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region <http://www.southasianfloods.org>

This web site is co-sponsored by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development and the World Meteorological Organization and is designed to share and disseminate flood information throughout the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region where rivers sustain the livelihoods of over a billion people.

With help and inspiration from many, a new island vulnerability web site has just gone on-line with the intent of exploring the unique challenges that islands and other isolated geographies face when dealing with risk and disasters. The web site examines the processes which create, maintain, and reduce the vulnerability of island communities.
