Eleventh Course on Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM-11), 21 July - 2 August 2003, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand

CBDRM-11 organized by ADPC will explore how to design and implement programs
for reducing vulnerability to hazards and discuss ways to promote a "culture of safety." Exercises and simulations will provide experience in risk assessment and risk management. The course will also showcase the experiences and lessons learned from a range of CBDRM programs implemented in Asia and the Pacific region.

The course fee is USD 2,000. When employers and sponsoring organizations send 5 participants, course fee will be waived for the sixth participant.
Course fee for a woman candidate is USD 1,800.

Fifth Course on Flood Risk Management (FRM-5), 15-26 September 2003,
Beijing, P.R. China

FRM-5 offers an integrated approach to manage floods in Asian countries. Successful and failed experiences with structural and non-structural strategies will be discussed to enable participants to understand causes and create county-specific mitigation recommendations.

Regional Conference on Geomorphic Hazards: Towards the Prevention of Disasters, 27 October - 2 November 2003, Mexico City

The Conference is organized by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) and the Mexican Society of Geomorphology (SMG).

30th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment, 10-14 November 2003, Honolulu, Hawaii.

"Information for Risk Management and Sustainable Development" will be the theme of the 30th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment being organized by the International Center for Remote Sensing of Environment, and the U.S. host-organizers, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in conjunction with the East-West Center, the Pacific Disaster Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Comprehensive sessions are planned on the following topics: 1) Hazards and Disasters, 2) Global Change, 3) Natural Resources, and 4) Technology and Infrastructure. The objective is to provide a framework for deriving additional benefit from each nation's investment in science and technology.

The abstract submission date has been extended to 31 March 2003. Abstract may be submitted online at the website given below. Early registration deadline date is 31 May 2003.

Undergraduate Degree Program on Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (A-DES)

The newly established "Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (A-DES)" in the faculty of science at Brandon University, Brandon, Manitoba, adopts an interdisciplinary approach to disaster management.

The undergraduate program provide students with a solid theoretical background and an applied foundation in the natural sciences, emphasizing elements of modern society and the environment as it pertains to risks, disaster and emergency processes and responses, mitigation, organizational development and resources management.

The program will normally be completed in four academic years and is also available on-line through the university's distance education program.
