Capacity Building on Disaster Mitigation in Asia using Information
Technology Applications (CASITA)

CASITA aims to build capacity of universities and training institutes in Asian countries to incorporate in urban planning courses and distance learning modules, the applications of geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing in the field of disaster risk management.

CASITA is a partnership between ADPC, the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), the Netherlands and Ecole Nationale des Sciences Geographiques (ENSG), France with funding support from the European Commission. The first kick-of workshop was held from 7 to 9 April 2003.

Community-Based Disaster Risk Management project in Thailand

As part of its mandatory service of disaster preparedness and relief, the Thai Red Cross (TRC) initiates its first project on Community-Based Disaster Risk Management with a pilot in the flood-prone Tha Gor Phai community in Ubon Ratchathani, a northeastern province of Thailand. Tha Gor Phai community has suffered from flood disaster for three consecutive years. However, limited assistance from the government has been provided, partly due to its remote location and restricted access.

The project aims to reduce the community's vulnerability to flood hazard and increase local capacity in coping with it through a participatory approach. The project is now in the inception stage. Preliminary research of the selected pilot community has been conducted by the 7th Red Cross Health Station in Ubon Ratchathani Province with assistance from the Warinchamrab Municipal Council in which the community is located.
