The Third Annual Meeting on Integrated Disaster Risk Management:Coping with Regional Vulnerability, 3-5 July 2003, Kyoto, Japan

The purpose of the annual meeting of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of the Kyoto University and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria is to present research and share ideas on selected issues of integrated disaster risk management.

Based on the achievements of the past two meetings, which focused on Reducing Socio-Economic Vulnerability and Megacity Vulnerability and Resilience, respectively, this year's meeting will further explore issues of integrated disaster risk management in real-world regional contexts by focusing on regional vulnerability to natural catastrophes. Continued effort will be made to foster international and interdisciplinary research applied to actual policy issues. For this purpose, regional issues and especially issues of multiple hazard disaster management and anticipatory approaches to deal with uncertainties of the future environment will be highlighted. Case studies on Japan and other Asian region will be presented.
