Distance
Learning on Disaster Management at University of Wisconsin
A series
of distance learning modules on emergency preparedness and responsehave
been developed by the Emergency Preparedness and Response Section
of UNHCR in collaboration with InterWorks, an international training
andconsulting organization, and the "eCenter" of University
of Wisconsin's Disaster Management Center (UW-DMC). The eCenter
has been given the opportunity to offer the same distance learning
modules to NGO staff andgovernment officials within the Asia-Pacific
region.
The
following are courses currently available: Contingency Planning,
Planning an Emergency Response, Managing an Emergency Response,
Managing External Relations, and Providing Emergency Support and
Advice.

The 13th World Congress of Disaster and Emergency Medicine(WCDEM-13),
6-10 May 2003, Melbourne, Australia
Keynote
and scientific presentations, workshops, and moderated poster sessions
will explore not only health and social sciences, but also related
non-health disciplines including the complex issues involved in
preventing and responding to disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
Registrants
can attend one or all five days. It is expected that 800 - 1000
representatives of disaster and emergency medicine from more than
70 nations, together with representatives from national and international
organizations will participate in the Congress.

The Third Annual Meeting on Integrated Disaster Risk Management:Coping
with Regional Vulnerability, 3-5 July 2003, Kyoto, Japan
The
purpose of the annual meeting of the Disaster Prevention Research
Institute (DPRI) of the Kyoto University and the International Institute
for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria is to present
research and share ideas on selected issues of integrated disaster
risk management.
Based
on the achievements of the past two meetings, which focused on Reducing
Socio-Economic Vulnerability and Megacity Vulnerability and Resilience,
respectively, this year's meeting will further explore issues of
integrated disaster risk management in real-world regional contexts
by focusing on regional vulnerability to natural catastrophes. Continued
effort will be made to foster international and interdisciplinary
research applied to actual policy issues. For this purpose, regional
issues and especially issues of multiple hazard disaster management
and anticipatory approaches to deal with uncertainties of the future
environment will be highlighted. Case studies on Japan and other
Asian region will be presented.
