Natural
Disasters in 2002: An analytical Overview
This
publication, which is also available online, is an initiative of
the Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADDRC), Tokyo, Japan. It attempts
to analyze the trends in the occurrence of natural disasters in
the year 2002 with the aim of accelerating and strengthening global
and regional socio-economic frameworks for addressing the consequences
of natural disasters and designing effective disaster reduction
mechanisms. This publication has been designed not only for policy
planners, researchers and academics but also to grassroot level
participants in development initiatives.

People, Communities, and Disasters, Roles and Responsibilities:
Proceedings
The
International Workshop on "People, Communities and Disasters:
Roles and Responsibilities" was held on 30 January-1 February
2003 at Kobe, Japan.
The
workshop aimed to throw light on disaster issues at the individual
and community level, and sought to examine how people's needs and
priorities could be integrated with disaster reduction initiatives.
The workshop focused on the sustainability issues of community-based
disaster management.
In
total 450 people participated in the workshop, including professionals,
representatives of governments, NGOs and academic and international
organizations, as well as students and teachers.
In this publication, the workshop proceedings details the discussions
over three days, and highlights the major issues and concerns for
effective disaster mitigation initiatives.
