CONFERENCES AND COURSES

First Regional Training Course on Disaster Risk Communication (DRC-1), 2-6 February 2004, Bangkok, Thailand

Developed under the Asian Urban Disaster Mitigation Program (AUDMP) of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), DRC-1 is an attempt to instill theoretical and practical aspects of communication campaigns to build capacity of development workers for a more effective awareness dissemination. The course is primarily useful to members of government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who work on the communication aspects of development programs. Other development-oriented organizations, however, who may not be directly involved in creating communication messages but have some collaboration with NGOs or other message-making organizations, are considered secondary target for the training program.

Outcomes expected are that participants will be able to:

  • conduct basic primary and secondary research to inform every aspect of the
    communication plan
  • create effective messages for target audiences using relevant media
  • know how to efficiently use time and resources
  • know how to effectively implement and evaluate communication campaigns

Public Health in Complex Emergencies (PHCE) Training Program

The PHCE Training Program is organized by World Education, Inc. in partnership with Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, International Rescue Committee, and regional partners from Lebanon, uganda and Thailand where the courses will be held.

The final schedules of trainings are:

25 August - 6 September 2003, Institute of Public Health, Kampala, Uganda
1 - 13 December 2003, American University of Beirut, Lebanon
19 - 31 January 2004, ADPC, Bangkok, Thailand

The two-week courses aim to enhance the capacity of humanitarian assistance workers and their organizations to respond to the health needs of refugees and internally displaced persons affected by emergencies.

First International Course on Hospital Emergency Preparedness (HEmP-1), 24-28 November 2003, Bangkok, Thailand

Organized by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), the Hospital Emergency Preparedness (HEmP-1) course is designed to assist health service providers, both administrative and medical, to develop a well-designed hospital-specific plans to increase the ability to respond to emergencies.

Upon completion of this course, it is expected that participants will be able to:

  • describe the relationship between hospitals and disasters
  • apply a method of judging or qualifying seismically functional/operational components of a hospital
  • simulat a mass casualty incident addressing the roles and responsibilities of each component of Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS)
  • discuss the basic requirement in the medical aspects of managing casualties and demonstrate stress debriefing
  • apply the concepts learned in on-site medical care to specific emergency situations
  • prepare an outline of a hospital disaster preparedness plan including response and recovery.

First Southeast Asia Water Forum, 17-21 November 2003, Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Global Water Partnership - Southeast Asia Technical Advisory Committee (GWP SEATAC), in partnership with the Royal Thai Government and various international organizations, is convening the First Southeast Asia Water Forum on 17-21 November 2003, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The theme of the Forum is Strengthening Regional Capacity through Best Practices in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

The Forum will feature seven thematic sessions focusing on the following key water management issues in the region:

  • Access to Safe Water Supply and Sanitation
  • Conflict Resolution and Basin Organizations
  • Community and Local Management of Water Resources
  • Water, Environment and Ecosystems
  • Integrated Coastal Area and River Basin Management

30th Regional Disaster Management Course (DMC-30), Bangkok, Thailand, 3-21 November 2003

The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is offering the 30th Regional Disaster Management Course (DMC-30) which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 3-21 November 2003. The purpose of the course is to provide comprehensive disaster management knowledge and skills to enhance the capabilities of executive managers who have key disaster management responsibilities. It is designed to enable professionals working in disaster management, development and donor agencies to effectively integrate disaster management into their development programs and policies.

By completing the course, participants will learn how to:

  • Develop effective strategies and systems for disaster prevention, mitigation, response and recovery
  • Apply risk management processes in order to identify, assess and deal with
    disaster risks
  • Utilize an emergency operations center to manage disaster events
  • Assess key implementation issues and requirements in disaster management.

ADPC aspires to provide a model training experience in this course by integrating well compiled study material, case studies, audio visual enhancement and interactive adult learning strategies. Experienced practitioners and experts from different international organizations will complement ADPC´s in-house expertise to conduct and facilitate the DMC-30 course.
