DMC-30 highlighted effective disaster management and prevention
strategies
The
Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) recently concluded the
Thirtieth Regional Disaster Management Course (DMC-30) which was
held in Bangkok, Thailand from 3-21 November 2003.
The
course was attended by 26 participants from 15 countries including
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Malaysia, Nepal,
Pakistan, Philippines, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.
Government and non-governmental organizations, donors and various
disaster management and development agencies were represented. The
course dealt with the development of effective strategies and systems
for disaster prevention, mitigation, response and recovery; applying
risk management processes in order to identify, assess and deal
with disaster risks; utilize an emergency operations center to manage
disaster events; and assess key implementation issues and requirements
in disaster management. Her Excellency Mrs. Leela K. Ponnapa, the
Ambassador of India to Thailand presided over the opening ceremony
of the course. The DMC-30 was also supported by United Nations-International
Strategy for Disaster Reduction through a Fellowship Programme.
The next DMC-31 will be organized in November 2004. Interested participants
and organizations can write to Mr. Gaurav Ray <gauravray@adpc.net>.
FEMA Curriculum for Community-Based Disaster Mitigation
The
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announces a new, on-line
curriculum. The community-based pre-disaster mitigation curriculum
is designed to involve emergency management and community and faith-based
organizations (CBOs/FBOs) in pre-disaster mitigation activities
at the local level. The goals of the curricula are to enable participants
to discover the role that CBOs/FBOs can play in mitigation activities,
determine possible mitigation projects in which they might engage,
and better understand ways that CBOs/FBOs and emergency managers
can work together.
The curriculum can be seen at <http://www.fema.gov/tab_education.shtm>.
To learn about pre-disaster mitigation successes in other communities
or share how these training materials were used to launch a successful
mitigation project, success stories are available at
